[SILICON UPDATE]
Embedder Than Ever
ESC Delivers the Goods
by Tom Cantrell

It’s been a great year for embedded systems designers. You have plenty of new technologies and design options to consider. This month, Tom showcases the best and brightest on display at the 2008 Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose. p. 76

Networking

WIZnet was showing a new incarnation the W5300, of their novel “TCP/IP-in-Hardware” approach (www.wiznet.co.kr). The premise exploits the fact that hardware can make things that are really cheap and things that are really fast.

The first-generation WIZnet W5100 chip proved to be a natural for adding Internet capability to blue-collar embedded designs. (Check out the results of the iEthernet WIZnet Design Contest 2007 at www.circuitcellar.com/wiznet). Combining a W5100 with an entry-level MCU delivers good networking performance, yet costs less than a typical 32-bit MCU + OS + Software stack solution.

The W5300 focuses on the performance side of the equation with more (and more flexibly allocated) buffer memory and faster I/O throughput (wider host bus and DMA). At the show, WIZnet had a demo centered on a 32-bit Linux SBC, comparing the performance of a traditional software TCP/IP stack with and without W5300 acceleration. The W5300 option is much faster and better yet, TCP/IP throughput is virtually unaffected by varying application software load (see Figure 6).

The performance and stability under load makes the W5300 a natural for high-traffic multimedia apps. (e.g., set-top box, media center)
